Show Notes
Steve is joined by Fiona Walker, president and junior coordinator of the Riddells Creek Tennis Club.
Riddells Creek introduced the Tennis 4 Teens program prior to the interruption of COVID, and Fiona has some wonderful insights to share on the benefits of Doing Sport Differently.
The conversation centres around the importance of creating a FUN experience for teens in a bid to attract and retain adolescent participants.
Tennis 4 Teens is a program – designed by teens, for teens – that encourages youths between the ages of 12 and 17 to be active in a social environment. The program is a non-competitive, stress-free, fun and social program, that offers participants activities both on and off court.

Key Takeaways
- How clubs that introduce a less structured and more social format of their sport have reaped the benefits.
- Tennis Victoria notes the majority of participants say all they want to do is “just have a hit” and socialize with friends – when sport stops being fun, that’s when people tend to drop out.
- The thing that keeps most people playing sport is the social connection, who they’re playing with, and if they’re enjoying the experience.
- Today’s youth want to play with their friends – which is often a drawback of competitive sport and the grading process.
