The Importance of Hydration

As members of our community head into Australia’s fiery and scalding Summer, it is important to remind our friends and family to stay hydrated each and every day because it is such an important factor for our overall health.

The human body depends on fluid, specifically water to survive. Each cell, tissue and organ throughout our body requires this liquid gold to work properly. From our kidneys that get rid of waste products that we no longer want to help carry nutrients and oxygen to our cells, fluid in our body is vital for all these types of functions to occur.

As we move towards Summer and start to return to playing sports and getting out and competing in physical activity, we need to keep drinking water; when you exercise, your body sweats as it tries to return to its optimal temperature, as outlined by Better Health. As sweat evaporates from your skin, it removes heat from the body, but you also lose body fluid. So, you need to drink fluid during exercise to replace the fluids you lose when you sweat.

According to Health Direct, dehydration occurs when the human body’s water content is too low, resulting in a number of issues that affects the body’s normal function.

Symptoms of dehydration:

Mild to moderate dehydration;

  • Thirsty
  • Headaches
  • Dizziness or lightheaded, particularly when you stand up
  • Have dark urine, and not so much of it
  • Dry mouth, lips and tongue

Severe dehydration;

  • Fast breathing
  • Fast heart rate and low blood pressure
  • Fever
  • Little or no urine
  • Irritable, drowsy or confused
  • Extremely thirsty
  • Very dry mouth

If you believe you are suffering from severe dehydration, seek medical attention.

As a general rule, men need about 10 cups of water every day and women need 8 cups. Whilst we can get water from any type of fluid, drinking straight water is much better for our overall health and what better way to do this then to have your own custom water bottle!
