Phillip Island, synonymous with speed and spectacle, traces its motorsport roots back to 1928 when A.C.R. White’s Austin 7 clinched victory in the first Australian Grand Prix. The Grand Prix became an annual extravaganza until 1935, transitioning to motorcycle racing on a 12-mile unsealed public road course until 1941, when the curtain fell due to excessive corner dust.
The thirst for competition persisted, birthing the Phillip Island Auto Racing Club (PIARC) in 1952. With £6,000, PIARC acquired 300 acres, heralding the construction of a permanent circuit. March 1956 marked the opening, hosting a car race that paved the way for a golden era until the early ’60s when touring cars’ relentless pounding forced a temporary closure.
In 1962, the circuit’s destiny changed hands as former racer Len Lukey and PIARC embarked on a rebuilding journey. Racing resumed in 1967, but Lukey’s passing in 1978 cast a shadow of neglect over the track. The Grand Prix’s return witnessed thrilling moments, none more emotional than Mick Doohan’s victory in the year of his return. In 2004, Linfox Property Group Pty Ltd took the reins, investing in a AUS $2 million safety upgrade and a resurfacing project in 2012, further solidifying Phillip Island’s status as a modern racing marvel.
