At Sports Community, we revel in sharing stories from our wonderful clubs across the country, and love to boast about their extraordinary accomplishments!
This story, shared by Boisdale Briagolong Football and Netball Club, is one that rejoices in the monumental victory of their stellar 2022 season, making history and breaking a 37 year long drought.
We heard from the club’s Netball Manager, Rachel Weatherley:
“Four out of six netball sides finished in the top four at the conclusion of the 2022 home and away season. A Grade (2nd), D Grade (1st, undefeated), Under 17s (1st) and under 15’s (1st).
On the 20th of August, all four teams played in the first semi-final, an exciting day for the club which could not have gone any smoother. All four netball sides plus our reserves football side secured their spot in the 2022 East Gippsland Football Netball League Grand Final.
It was an unbelievable day for the club; tears of joy were shed and hugs were embraced.
The day that made history and broke some serious droughts. September 3rd 2022 will be one that is held closely by many involved at BBFNC.
The day started with under 15s, and the girls absolutely turned it on. The vibes were high from the get-go. The girls played their hearts out, and it certainly paid off. Winning by seven goals.
Under 17s started off in a close match against Lindenow, but coming into the third quarter, the girls put the foot down to win by 12 goals.
D Grade remaining undefeated throughout the H&A season came hot for the granny. With the day being extra special for stalwarts Happo (Final game before announcing her retirement/played 324 games for the club) and Del (played her 250th game in the GF), the girls finished the season off with a bang and came away as premiers.
Reserves had a tough matchup with Wy Yung. Training hard and finishing the season strong, the boys were ready to go. They fought hard until the final siren but unfortunately lost by four goals in the end.
A Grade was the final match of the day, the girls heading in as the underdogs and feeling fit and strong. Matching up against a strong Wy Yung side was certainly a battle until the final whistle. The girls got away in the final minutes of the game-winning by seven goals.
History was made at the club yesterday. Under 15s breaking a 37-year drought, Under 17s and D Grade winning the first ever grand final for the club and A Grade breaking a 21-year drought. We thought the Semi-final was an unbelievable moment. I can’t even describe what it felt like on Grand Final day; the atmosphere was insane. One that will be remembered forever.”
We wish to congratulate Boisdale Briagolong Football and Netball Club on their recent, and historical, success story. Your hard work, determination and perseverance is a story that is inspiring to all clubs and players alike in the sporting community. Thank you for sharing and we wish you ongoing success in 2023!
